What is Myopia Management?

Myopia is quickly becoming an epidemic across the world! Myopia, or nearsightedness, is when the eye grows too long or too powerful and results in blurred vision and the need for glasses. Though very common, and correctable, the increased incidence worldwide has led to much research on the topic.

Genetics - the single highest risk factor of myopia. High myopia tends to be more heritable. Though not predictive, parents who are myopic, significantly contribute to the profile.

Time spent outside - contributes to the risk profile for myopia progressing. Scientists have found an association between the time a child spends indoors and progression.

Amount of near work (screen time, reading, etc.) is long established to increase risk factors for myopia. The more intensive near work, the more the distance vision can deteriorate. This is due to the mechanical stress on the eyes’ focusing system, as well as growth signals due to blur in the peripheral retina.

Current prescription and age - are clues into the profile for a child’s risk of progressing rapidly, or developing a high end point prescription.

Currently we offer 3 main treatment options for Myopia Management. Though not covered by insurances, they are FDA approved and have been shown to slow myopia progression up to 59%!

Inquire at your next eye exam, and one of our doctors would be happy to discuss with you!!
